Though at one time tribes of people devoted to the roving, tribal way of life, there is no longer much “safe” wilderness left in the world. Today, barbarians are often people who have only survived because they were forced to dig deep within themselves and find their own connection to the primal. These people now carve out a tenuous coexistence with civilization and make their livings as mercenaries or even as hired guards. However, sometimes this is not possible. It’s possible that the nature of a barbarian may drive them to commit acts that see them cast out of civilization, which is often as a form of punishment in a world of limited resources.
In other cases the situation may be reversed, and casting a person out leads them to become a barbarian in order to survive. Sometimes they may not even be guilty of a wrongdoing, for in the harshest parts of the world the act of excommunication is a necessary ritual that keeps the population sustainable. A rare few among these unfortunate souls may live in the Everdusk, even if it is just barely within it.
