The average mortal tends to keep to themselves. They endeavor to live their lives peacefully; they are neither prone to heroic deeds nor malicious intent. On the grander scale of the cosmos, such an attitude is rare, but not impossible. In other cases an entity may have goals but a lack of staunch morals, while others still may be downright unpredictable. These are the sort that could be considered independent powers.
The ranks of the benevolent powers provide the source of all angels, but not all angels remain among them, and their kinds makes up the majority of these free agents. Such angels tend to hold no enmity nor love for their former master, but recognize their own desires for independence. Though these beings have somehow managed to carve out their own section of the universe without completely succumbing to the chaos of free will, they have still been forced to forsake their given names.
Most folk would only choose to invoke these entities casually from time to time, as the situation may call for it without meaning much by. For instance, one might curse Mikhael after a very unfortunate dice game. However, there are some who would pray directly to them, and they can be from many walks of life. Some seek their power to do right by the world, or even by EL himself. Others might seek their power to merely further their own self gratification. Others still might curse the name of EL. The world of Mistwatch is often unkind, and some may find it hard to trust conventional wisdom.
